| In
1995 I was asked to direct a film based on A DARKER PURPOSE, a
stage play by Wendy Riss. I did so, in Las Vegas and Los
Angeles. I
made the acquaintance of some very nice actors and crewpersons. Unfortunately
the film was reedited by the producers, and its ironic score by
Dan Wool and Pray For Rain - sometimes synthetic, sometimes sad,
sometimes demented, often lyrical - was completely stripped out
and replaced with fake jazz, of the kind producers buy by the yard
for pornos.
All this went on behind my back, while I
was in Mexico working on DEATH & THE COMPASS. And the resultant mess - ironically
titled THE WINNER - went straight to cable. Sadly, it is not
my movie. It's an Alan Smithee film.
(In Japan, the distributors Cable Hogue and
GAGA insisted on showing a version which partially resembled my
original cut; and the Pray For Rain score was preserved.) (Coeur
also distribute the DEATH & THE
COMPASS soundtrack - CR-0008
